A multi-signature wallet linked to Vitalik Buterin has sent 40,000 Ethereum to an unknown address. The total value of the transaction is approximately $47.7 million. After this transaction, there is still about 250,000 Ethereum worth $ 300 million in the wallet of the Ethereum founder.

With 250,000 Ethereum in the wallet, the multi-signature wallet from the brains behind Ethereum is the 24th largest wallet in existence. A multi-signature wallet is a special wallet, because you have to put several signatures to move the funds. For example, you can work with a multi-signature wallet with a total of 3 private keys, 2 of which you need to move the funds.
This is a way to store your funds more securely. For example, it is not a problem if you lose 1 of the 3 private keys, because you can still set the Ethereum in motion with the 2 other keys. It is also possible to protect yourself against a physical attack in this way, because you can store the keys in three different physical locations. Vitalik Buterin probably does it for this last reason.
Transaction to the same address
On the blockchain we can see that it is not the first time that Vitalik Buterin sends Ethereum from this wallet to this address. On May 16, during the implosion of the Terra protocol, the founder of Ethereum also sent more than 20,000 Ethereum to this address. This transaction comes ten days after Vitalik Buterin sold 3,000 Ethereum for USDC via Uniswap V3 using another wallet.
Incidentally, it is not certain whether that transaction with 3,000 Ethereum actually belonged to Vitalik Buterin. Evan Van Ness, a prominent member of the Ethereum community, told his followers at the time that Vitalik Buterin told him it was not his transaction. Vitalik Buterin himself has not said anything about this incident, so we have no certainty about it.
