Motorola Rizr Rollable is the most irreverent smartphone at MWC 2023

The Mobile World Congress 2023 has started! Barcelona hosts the latest edition of the largest mobile technology event in the world with the participation of 4gnews. Immediately among the novelties we have the amazing Motorola Rizr Rollable with a “roll-up” screen.

Although the word “rollable” is probably not the most orthodox word, the truth is that it ends up describing the screen that stretches and shrinks according to the user’s will. It is a strictly conceptual product in the sense that it is not being produced on a large scale, nor are there any plans for commercialization at this time. However, it is quite captivating and a proof of concept.

Motorola has its new Rizr Rollable Concept Smartphone on display at MWC 2023. The highlight is the capabilities and the screen format that can be stretched as needed, not needing to fold the phone as in the format. Flip.

First of all, the Motorola Rizr range includes some of the brand’s most iconic mobile phones and smartphones. This is where the legendary Motorola Razr Z3 comes in, which took the market by storm in 2006 with its full keyboard that slides out when needed.

On the other hand, it looked like an “ordinary” cell phone when opened normally, with the alphanumeric keypad obscuring its true advantage. Such is the case with this new smartphone, which at first glance resembles a normal Android smartphone.

Just like on a treadmill or escalator, the smartphone screen rises from the back of the product. The concept product is relatively thick, with a rounded bottom edge, the point from which the screen extension occurs.

It becomes easier to explain and understand exactly how it works on video, as shared in various excerpts on Twitter by various sources and reporters.

This extendable screen physically increases the height of the smartphone when the screen is stretched out. However, the structure of the phone does not change like the foldable smartphones commonly found on the market.

The phone has an automated mechanism to stretch or shrink the screen, without the need to mechanically open or close the phone. It’s a unique solution, a testament to the engineering and innovative spirit that has always guided Motorola.

The video shows the compact form factor of the phone when not extended, slightly larger than a closed Galaxy Z Flip or OPPO FINd N2 Flip in the closed position. However, when the screen is extended, it becomes taller, like an open foldable.

The secret is in the 5 to 6.5-inch POLED screen

👀 Wow! I think I have found my favorite device in #MWC23 even before it starts. This roll up concept is really impressive and @Motorcycle he was confident enough to allow us hands-on time. It is interesting to observe the path towards commercialization of this… pic.twitter.com/EDgkWsOm1t

The Motorola smartphone’s P (plastic) OLED display stretches from 5 inches (compact by today’s standards) to 6.5 inches when fully open/stretched out. In this way, the aspect ratio of the screen changes from 15:9 to 22:9 when it is fully open.

In short, as this is merely a show product, a proof of concept, we have something effectively different here. It brings its challenges such as automatic application adjustment, among others.

Here are some photos for the people who have been asking. It’s an intriguing product but very much a concept/prototype at present. But it works and works as you can see in the video above. pic.twitter.com/lylhL44VAs
