Moreirense coach Vasco Botelho da Costa is preparing his squad for a challenging home match against a formidable FC Porto, emphasizing his team’s strategic approach and evolving identity despite recent losses.
FC Porto arrives for the Monday evening clash having conceded only one goal and boasting the league’s best attack. Botelho da Costa acknowledged their opponent’s prowess, calling them “the most competent team in the championship.”
“It will be a game where, at times, we won’t be able to be the team we always want to be, and we will have to be the team that FC Porto allows us to be,” Botelho da Costa told reporters. “This ends up being normal, given the opponent’s quality.”
Despite this, the coach indicated a plan to counter Porto’s high-pressing and versatile play. He highlighted potential “fragilities” observed in previous matches, stating, “We will find space to hurt FC Porto at certain moments.”
Moreirense itself is undergoing “structural changes” as it works to “create an identity” for the team. Botelho da Costa stressed the importance of his players being fully engaged for such a high-profile game.
The match comes as both teams seek to rebound from recent defeats. FC Porto is aiming to respond after a Europa League loss to Nottingham Forest, while Moreirense recently suffered a defeat in the Portuguese Cup.
Botelho da Costa downplayed concerns about his team’s confidence following two consecutive losses. He believes playing against a top-tier club like FC Porto inherently motivates the players.
“I will always place the five biggest clubs in the First League on a different level, it’s almost like playing two championships,” he explained. He views stepping out of the comfort zone as a positive for his team’s development.
Moreirense faces the match without Kiko Bondoso, who is injured. Forward Schettine is also doubtful, with a final decision expected after a morning training session.
The 9th-round Primeira Liga fixture is scheduled for Monday at 8:15 PM local time.
