More than half of the population practiced sports during the pandemic

The National Survey of Physical Activity set out to answer one of the most recurrent questions in the context of the pandemic: how it affected customs related to physical activity. In this context, 50.9% of those surveyed said they had practiced sports. Walking, running, cycling and playing soccer were the most repeated activities.

The survey also revealed that walking is the most practiced physical activity (65%) and soccer is the sport most played in the country (37%).

The research was proposed with the objective of identifying and analyzing the physical and sports activities that are practiced in the country, to favor the design of public policies according to the needs of the population. The survey also made it possible to know relevant aspects of physical activity such as frequency, motivations, places and difficulties of those who practice it. It is the first survey of these characteristics since 2009.

A random sample stratified by geographical regions of the country with proportional allocation of size was used. Eight regions were considered: City of Buenos Aires, Greater Buenos Aires, Interior of the Province of Buenos Aires, NEA, NOA, Patagonia, Center and Cuyo, with a total of 5002 cases analyzed. In addition, three other variables were taken into account: age, gender and educational level.

All this was carried out within the framework of the Social Observatory of Sports, a body created between the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Nation and the IDAES School of the National University of General San Martín (UNSAM).

The first results obtained confirm certain trends and also cast doubt on some previous certainties. For this reason, a second report will be produced in 2022 to complement and extend the analysis of this data. Some of the most important that the survey showed were the following:

-Three out of four people surveyed expressed attraction to sport in general terms, while seven out of ten expressed their interest in practicing it.

-50.9% of the cases analyzed practiced sports between March 2020 and July 2021 in the framework of the pandemic. Half of the rest said that was the reason why they stopped doing it.

-Activities most carried out by those surveyed and surveyed in this period of time: walking (65%), running (50%), riding a bicycle (50%) and playing soccer (37%). Further back are fitness activities, yoga and dance.

-More than half of the people expressed playing sports alone.
