Morata Breaks Silence After Penalty Miss Against Portugal

Morata’s tough week just got tougher. Two days after missing the crucial penalty that handed Spain’s League of Nations title to Portugal, he’s back at the Allianz Arena, speaking to Movistar. “I failed again, just like anyone else doing their job,” he says. “I’m angry, not sad. We all agreed we did a good job.”

The 32-year-old forward is still reeling from the aftermath of the final. He received death threats after the match, a stark reminder of the high stakes involved. “I feel bad for my teammates, but that’s life,” Morata shrugs. “We won recently, now we’re going through a tough patch. We need to learn from it.”

With 86 international appearances and 37 goals under his belt, Morata’s spot on the Spanish national team is far from secure. “Nothing’s certain, it depends on many things,” he admits. “We need to think it through calmly, but yeah, there’s a possibility I won’t be here in September.”

The Galatasaray player was the lone wolf who missed his penalty kick in the shootout, after Portugal and Spain ended the regular time with a 2-2 draw. Now, he’s facing an uncertain future with the national team. Will he bounce back, or will this tough week mark the beginning of the end of his international career?
