Morant: Budgets for 2022 are an unprecedented gamble for R&D

Morant recalled that in the next financial year of 2022 science will have 3,843 million euros, which is “the biggest investment in R&D in history”, almost twice the resources than in 2020 and close to a 90% more in just two years.

These funds will make it possible to carry out more research, promote scientific culture, have better infrastructure and generate more job opportunities for scientists, highlighted the minister in a press conference in which she collected the accounts of her department for the next fiscal year.

Morant recalled that the State Investigation Agency will have 1,358 million euros (64.5% more than a year ago), and that the research centers of the Superior Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), of the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), and the Energy, Environmental and Technological Research Center (Ciemat) will have 1,818 million, which will be distributed in more than 150 research centers.

He insisted that all these investments will help create new opportunities and generate the necessary conditions for attract and retain talent researcher, “so that scientists can stay and return who had to leave”.

In turn, the General Secretary for Research of the Ministry of Science and Innovation, Rachel Yotti, pointed out that the State Research Agency will have 1,358 million euros, 447 million from the EU, but more than 12% of the regular budget.

He also highlighted the important CSIC budget increase that next year will have 1,122 million, 10 million more than the previous year.

For Yotti, these budgets are “an indispensable element” to guarantee the science of excellence, renew the personnel and equipment of the centers and maintain the multidisciplinary leadership of the CSIC.
