Min Aung Hlaing Snubs ASEAN, Myanmar Election Talks Canceled

A planned diplomatic trip to Myanmar hit a wall today. Foreign ministers from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines were set to fly into Yangon. Their goal was to discuss upcoming elections with the military government. But the mission was abruptly canceled. Myanmar’s military leader, Min Aung Hlaing, said he was simply “not available” to meet.

This unexpected snub happened on September 19, 2025. The group represented the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN. They had hoped to talk about the military’s election plans. These elections are slated to happen between December 2026 and January 2027.

ASEAN leaders agreed in July to send this delegation. They wanted to see if the proposed elections would be truly inclusive. Mohamad Hasan, Malaysia’s foreign minister, was leading the effort. He holds the rotating chair of ASEAN.

Insiders whispered that this visit was always on shaky ground. Min Aung Hlaing seemed unwilling to meet from the very start. Some believe he feels stronger because China and India openly support his government’s election plans. These powerful nations have not raised many questions.

Analysts say this incident shows ASEAN’s weak position. The regional bloc has little real power over Myanmar. Since the 2021 military coup, ASEAN has pushed a five-point peace plan. Yet, the military government has ignored it completely. Meanwhile, the human toll in Myanmar keeps rising. More than 7,200 people have died from military crackdowns and ongoing fighting.
