Min Aung Hlaing Confirms December Myanmar Election Amidst Ongoing Civil War

Min Aung Hlaing declares Myanmar elections this December will definitely be held, even as civil war rages.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing has made a firm promise. He stated that national elections will happen this December. He said there will be no delays, even with ongoing civil unrest. The military leader shared this message with the State Administration Council’s peace and security committee. He believes these elections are the next step to form a parliament and a new government.

For Min Aung Hlaing, this election is a way to follow the country’s rules. He calls it a path to democracy. But many experts see things differently. They believe it is a move to keep the military in power. The Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) is the military’s favored party. This party benefits from new election rules. These rules often prevent main opposition groups from running. Also, the military already holds 25% of seats in the parliament.

Min Aung Hlaing also ordered quick trials for anyone involved in election-related killings. New election protection laws came out on July 29. These laws are tough. They say anyone who tries to stop the elections can face severe punishment. This ranges from three years in prison to the death penalty.

Naturally, not everyone agrees with these plans. Several armed groups oppose the military. These include the Arakan Army (AA), the Karen National Union (KNU), and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA). They have all declared they will not allow elections in their areas. They are ready to use all means to stop them.

The world is watching closely. The United States and European nations, along with the National Unity Government (NUG), have called these elections a sham. They say it is just a way for the military to hold onto power. Malaysia, as the chair of ASEAN, has asked for an end to the violence before any elections. Yet, some countries are signaling support. China, India, Russia, and Belarus seem to back the military’s plans. This shows how deeply divided opinions are on the matter.
