Microsoft has published the requirements for an “AI laptop”.

During CES, major computer manufacturers introduced their new lines of machines that will soon hit the market. Most were laptops equipped with the latest AMD or Intel chips and supposedly had artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.

Before these laptops came out, Microsoft has published the requirements that qualify a laptop as an “AI laptop”.

According to TrendForce, Microsoft has discovered this Laptops with AI features must have at least 16GB of RAM. This move is expected to lead to higher demand for DRAM and reduce the popularity of devices with 8GB RAM.

Additionally, to be considered AI, these laptops must have at least one performance 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS). Currently, CPUs that meet the 40 TOPS requirement for the NPU include the chips Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite and AMD Strix Point.

However, Intel Meteor Lake, which was released in December 2003 with a combined CPU+GPU+NPU performance of 34 TOPS, is not enough Intel Lunar Lake could cross the 40 TOP mark by the end of this year.

The first “Windows AI Ultrabooks” will use the Snapdragon This poses a challenge for Intel and AMD, which typically hold a dominant position in the PC market.

Microsoft's rules also affect the type of memory technology we use, as chips that meet these requirements use LPDDR5x. We will see LPDDR5x instead of the current DDR SO-DIMM modules because it can send data faster, which is crucial for AI applications.
