Mexico Leads Green Mining Revolution with Renewable Energy Adoption.

Mexico’s mining industry is shifting towards a more sustainable future. The country’s mining sector is crucial for producing batteries and components for renewable energy technologies. However, mining has traditionally been associated with environmental degradation.

Renewable Energy in Mining

The Mexican Mining Chamber (CAMIMEX) reports that a third of the energy used in mining now comes from renewable sources. Currently, around 73 mining units in Mexico produce renewable electricity, generating 3734 gigawatt-hours, which accounts for 34% of the industry’s total energy consumption. CAMIMEX aims to increase the number of mining units using renewable energy to make the industry more environmentally friendly. Member companies are adapting their operations to reduce their environmental footprint by incorporating renewable energy into their processes.

Some key areas where mining plays a vital role include the production of components for wind turbines and electric vehicles. To achieve sustainability goals, CAMIMEX member companies are following the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. They use international frameworks like the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures to track their environmental progress and climate impact.

Leading the Way

Companies like Peñoles and Fresnillo plc are making significant strides in sustainable mining practices. Peñoles and Fresnillo plc reuse over 80% of the water they use due to a recirculation process. The company aims to power 100% of its operations with renewable electricity by 2028. Grupo México has installed wind farms to generate clean energy for its plants. Other companies, such as Alamos Gold and Minera San Xavier, have launched reforestation campaigns in former mining areas to restore native vegetation.

These efforts demonstrate that mining can be done in an environmentally responsible manner. By adopting sustainable practices and renewable energy, Mexico’s mining industry is setting an example for the rest of the world. The goal is to make Mexico a global leader in sustainable mining.
