MEO, NOS and Vodafone with 5G: how much it costs and for whom is it free

In recent weeks, the much-talked about 5G has finally started to reach the main telecommunications operators in Portugal. Anyone who has a smartphone with support for these mobile networks can already enjoy the service if they are in a covered area. Something that, for now, is limited to all the district capitals of mainland Portugal and Islands, for all operators.

The first operator to launch 5G in Portugal was NOS, followed by Vodafone a few days later. In early January, MEO made 5G available to its customers.

Now that the three main operators already have the service available, there are doubts that customers may have. Will 5G be free for everyone? How much will customers have to pay to access 5G after the “trial period”? In this article we answer these questions, relying on the communications of the three main operators in the matter.

NOS won the 5G auction in Portugal, being the first to make mobile technology available to its customers. But as we’ve been reporting, this won’t be free for everyone.

The NOS 5G free trial program will be until January 31. This means that, until this date, all customers will have free access to 5G. From there, only customers below will have access to 5G speeds, for free and forever.

For NOS customers with other rates, as of January 31, “those who wish to maintain the 5G service will be able to activate the 5G Upgrade, for a monthly fee of 5 euros.”

Vodafone

Vodafone’s strategy is similar to that of NOS. Until January 31, 2022, all customers with compatible equipment have free access to Vodafone 5G in the coverage areas.

As of February 1, everyone with the Red 10 GB, Red Infinity postpaid and Vodafone You 10 GB and Yorn X 10 GB prepaid rates will be entitled to 5G integrated by default. From that moment, the rest of the rates will be applied the amount of 5 euros per month, if the customer places the order.

MEO

MEO was the last operator to arrive at the 5G “party”. But your customers can also use this mobile technology for free until January 31.

As of February 1, 2022, MEO will have a system similar to that of the competition. Postpaid rates with a base ceiling of 10 GB or more will enjoy this maximum speed (5G) for free. Other rates can subscribe to 5G for € 5 per month.

We verify that all operators follow the same patterns. For those who do not have a covered rate for free 5G, it will be difficult to justify paying another € 5 a month for a speed that, to this day, remains marginal and with coverage only in the district capitals.
