Fashion watchers and internet sleuths alike recently found themselves tangled in a stylish mystery. The question on everyone’s lips: Was Melania Trump’s belt pink or purple? Her choice of attire for a grand state banquet definitely got people talking.
The First Lady, who is 55 years old, stepped out for an important state banquet. The British royal family hosted this event at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, September 17. She wore a stunning design from Carolina Herrera, which quickly set the internet abuzz with fashion debate.
When you first looked, her long, off-the-shoulder gown seemed to be a bright canary yellow. A lavender belt sat right in the middle. But depending on how the light hit the photos, some social media users saw things differently. They believed the dress was a softer yellow, paired with a pastel pink belt. The changing colors caused quite a stir.
Melania finished off her look with dazzling emerald earrings. These added an extra pop of color to her elegant ensemble. She stood brightly next to her husband, President Donald Trump, for all the official pictures.

This special state dinner honored President Trump, age 79, and the First Lady. It happened during their official visit to the United Kingdom. The invitation called for a white-tie dress code, meaning very formal attire.
Social media quickly filled with comments about Melania’s outfit. One person said, “She looked spectacular.” But they quickly added that “the yellow and pink together didn’t work.” Another commenter thought the colors were better suited for an Easter party. A third user weighed in, stating, “Melania is wearing a purple belt, green earrings, and a gold dress.”
A source close to Melania cleared up some of the confusion. They told the Daily Mail that her dress was actually cream yellow. The belt, they insisted, was a shade of “Easter purple.”
This whole fashion debate felt a bit like history repeating itself. Many remembered the viral dress mystery of 2015. Back then, everyone argued if a photo showed a dress that was black and blue, or white and gold.
Other royals also made dazzling appearances for this big occasion. Princess Kate Middleton dressed to impress, as expected. She wore a couture silk crepe gown by British designer Phillipa Lepley. She topped it with a hand-embroidered gold Chantilly lace evening coat. Her accessories included earrings once owned by the late Queen Elizabeth II and the sparkling Lover’s Knot tiara.
Kate also wore an elegant blue sash. She proudly displayed the iconic King Charles III’s Royal Family Order and Elizabeth II’s Royal Family Order. The Grand Cross star of the Royal Victorian Order completed her official regalia.
Prince William also joined the event, looking sharp in his ceremonial attire. He sported the sash of the Most Noble Order of the Garter with the Lesser George. He also wore the Order of the Bath and the Gold, Diamond, and Platinum Coronation emblems.
