Marlins, with eight runs in the ninth inning, beat Diamondbacks

Jacob Stallings hit a go-ahead single in the ninth, Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed with a three-run homer and the Miami Marlins scored eight times in the final inning to rout the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-3 on Wednesday night.

Miami controlled much of the game until the eighth, when pinch-hitter Jordan Luplow tied the score with a two-run homer off reliever Steven Okert.

The Marlins reacted quickly and decisively against Marc Melancon. Stallings entered the game batting just .183 but responded in the ninth inning, hitting a single that put the Marlins back in front.

Chisholm then found a low pitch and disappeared into left-center field. The ball went just over the wall in a three-run homer that stretched Miami’s lead to 7-3.

Recent games haven’t been good for Melancon (0-4), the veteran closer who signed a two-year, $14 million deal with the Diamondbacks during the offseason before this season. He has allowed eight touchdowns in his last three outings.

Avisaíl García capped the ninth inning with another three-run homer off JB Wendelken. It was Garcia’s second at-bat of the inning—he started the attack by drawing a walk.

For the Marlins, Cuban Jorge Soler 5-1 with a run scored. The Dominicans Erik González 3-1 with a run scored and an RBI, Jesús Sánchez 4-0 with two runs scored, Bryan de la Cruz 4-2 with a run scored. The Venezuelans García 4-2 with a run scored and three RBIs, Miguel Rojas 4-1. Jesus Aguilar 1-1.

For the Diamondbacks, the Venezuelan David Peralta 4-0. The Dominicans Ketel Marte 4-0, Geraldo Perdomo 3-0.
