Madagascar President Flees Amid Coup Attempt: “Must Flee to Survive”

Madagascar’s president has fled the capital and called for negotiations after parts of the military attempted a coup amid escalating protests over public services.

President Andry Rajoelina announced his departure from an undisclosed location via national television on October 14, 2025. He stated he had to secure his life after elements of the military rebelled and tried to seize power.

Rajoelina urged all factions to engage in peaceful talks and respect the constitution.

The crisis intensified on a recent Saturday when special forces joined demonstrations led by young people. These protesters had called for the resignation of Rajoelina and his cabinet.

Public discontent had been simmering for months over severe, nationwide electricity and water supply failures. The protests began on September 25, 2025.

They quickly broadened into a wider movement against the government and its leadership. This marks the most significant period of political instability in Madagascar since 2009.

While President Rajoelina did not specify his means of departure, reports indicate he was evacuated by a French military aircraft.
