Madagascar President dissolves government after deadly Gen Z utility protests kill 22

A wave of public anger in Madagascar has led to a major political shake-up. The nation’s president has dissolved his entire government. He also removed the prime minister from office. This decision came after widespread protests, largely led by young people, against ongoing problems with water and electricity.

On September 29, 2025, President Andry Rajoelina announced these changes on national television. He spoke about the pressure from what local media called “Gen Z” youth demonstrations. These groups were frustrated with the constant power cuts and water shortages.

President Rajoelina expressed his understanding for the public’s anger, sadness, and hardships. He admitted that government officials had not done their job well. He plans to accept nominations for a new prime minister within three days. A new government will then take shape. The president also stated his desire to talk with the protesting youth.

The demonstrations began in Antananarivo, the capital, on September 25. They quickly spread to eight cities across the country. Thousands of protesters chanted a powerful message: “We want to live, not just survive.” Sadly, the gatherings turned violent. The United Nations condemned security forces for using too much force. Reports indicate at least 22 people died, and more than 100 were hurt.

These protests reflect a deep-seated unhappiness. For a long time, citizens have been frustrated with failing public services. They also question the government’s transparency. Madagascar has faced many political crises since gaining independence in 1960.

To curb the unrest, the government imposed a night curfew in Antananarivo. This happened after incidents of looting and violence. Police used tear gas and rubber bullets to control crowds. There were even reports of live bullets being fired in some areas. Volker Türk, the UN Human Rights Chief, called for the release of protesters who had been arrested without proper cause.
