Noted lyricist and Urdu poet Gulzar will be honored with the Jnanpith Award. The Jnanpith selection committee announced this on Saturday. In an official announcement, the Jnanpith selection committee wrote, “It has been decided to give this award (for 2023) to famous writers of two languages, Sanskrit writer Jagadguru Rambhadracharya and noted Urdu writer Shri Gulzar.”
The official selection committee’s press release announcing the award to Gulzar said that Gulzar is setting new milestones in the field of literature with his feature-length film “Journey”. In poetry he discovered a new genre, “Triveni”, a three-line poem without rhyme. Gulzar has always created something new through his poetry. For some time now he has also devoted himself intensively to children’s poetry.
We tell you that Gulzar is not only a lyricist and poet but also an ace filmmaker. He has made films like Mere Apne, Parichay, Aandhi, Mausam and Lekin. Furthermore, his name is one of the best Urdu poets of his time.
Even before the Gyanpeeth Award, Gulzar was honored with numerous awards. He has previously received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Padma Bhushan, Sahitya Akademi Award, an Oscar, a Grammy Trophy and several National Film Awards.
