LA Fires Force Oscar Nominations Announcement to be Put on Hold

Oscar Awards Postponed Due to Devastating Forest Fires

The 97th edition of the Oscar Awards has been impacted by the severe forest fires in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the postponement of the nominations announcement and the extension of the voting period for its members.

The Academy’s executive director, Bill Kramer, expressed his deepest condolences to those affected by the fires, stating that many members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area and are being thought of during this difficult time.

Multiple Events Canceled or Postponed

Several events leading up to the Oscars have been postponed or canceled, including the Academy’s “Tea party,” the American Film Institute (AFI) awards luncheon, and the Critics Choice awards. The Writers Guild of America also delayed announcing its award nominations.

The devastating fires have claimed the lives of at least five people and forced the evacuation of around 130,000 people in Los Angeles County. The most recent fire is in the Hollywood district, threatening an area near the Walk of Fame.

The fires have also affected several celebrities, with some losing their homes, such as actor Billy Crystal and businesswoman Paris Hilton. Others, like actress Jamie Lee Curtis and director Guillermo del Toro, had to be evacuated.
