The “King of Portugal” off-road competition is known for its extreme challenges. Competitors push their vehicles across some of the toughest terrain imaginable. This past Saturday, however, the rugged ground of Vimioso witnessed a profound tragedy. A 52-year-old race official, crucial to the event’s smooth and safe running, died after being struck by one of the competing vehicles.
The official was diligently performing his duties as a race commissioner. He was overseeing a difficult section of the course when the accident happened. The incident cast a somber shadow over an event usually marked by high-octane excitement and intense competition.
João Noel Afonso, the sub-regional commander for the Terras de Trás-os-Montes region, confirmed the details of the accident. He stated that the man’s death was declared right at the scene. A medical team from the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) helicopter arrived swiftly. They confirmed the fatality, marking a moment of deep sorrow in the heart of the race.
The incident unfolded in the São Joanico parish, which is part of the Vimioso municipality. This specific area is known for its demanding trails, including a rocky stretch locally nicknamed “Dinosaur Eggs.” The treacherous nature of the terrain highlights the extreme conditions faced by both competitors and event staff. The emergency call about the accident came in at 5:43 PM.
Emergency services quickly mobilized to the remote location. Eight firefighters from Vimioso rushed to the site, supported by two vehicles. The INEM helicopter team, which operates from its base in Macedo de Cavaleiros, also flew in to provide urgent assistance. The GNR, Portugal’s national guard, took charge of the scene to manage the situation and begin their investigation into the tragic event.
