Kim Jong Un to Attend Funeral of Kim Yong Nam, North Korea’s Loyal Ceremonial Head

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is set to attend the funeral of Kim Yong-nam, a veteran official who served as the country’s ceremonial head of state for decades, highlighting the enduring dynastic control over Pyongyang’s highly centralized power structure.

Kim Yong-nam died at age 97 from multiple organ failure, state media reported. He was a prominent figure, often greeting foreign dignitaries and delivering state pronouncements.

Although not related by blood to the ruling Kim family, he remained a key loyalist for over two decades. His role was largely symbolic, presenting the nation’s face to the world without holding ultimate authority.

Kim Jong Un plans to pay his respects in Pyongyang on November 4, 2025. His attendance is intended to express deep condolences for a figure central to maintaining the regime’s public image.

Kim Yong-nam served as chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly from 1998 until 2019. In this capacity, he formally represented North Korea on the global stage.

He consistently delivered resolute propaganda speeches at official ceremonies. Despite his high-profile position, true authority has always rested with the Kim family, which founded and has governed North Korea since 1948.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) first reported his death and the details of the planned funeral.
