North Korean leader Kim Jong-un recently attended important military tests. State media, KCNA, showed pictures of him at these events. He watched drone and missile tests. Kim then ordered his military to make more drones. He also pushed for faster work on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for these drones.
The images released showed Kim standing near a large drone. It looked a lot like the “Reaper” drones used by the United States. Other photos displayed drones flying high. Missiles were also seen hitting their targets precisely. The North Korean leader was “very happy” with how the tests went.
North Korean state media called drones “key military tools.” They said developing drones is a “top priority.” This goal helps modernize their military. An expert from the Korea Institute for National Unification in South Korea commented on this. He believes Kim sees drone technology as central to becoming a “great power.”
Kim Jong-un specifically told scientists to speed up work on new AI technology. He also demanded that drone production should “grow and strengthen.” Experts think Russia is helping with this AI push. They also suggest lessons from the war in Ukraine play a part. AI will help drones work even when GPS signals or communications are blocked.
Analysts also notice a possible link between North Korea’s drone progress and its growing friendship with Russia. South Korean officials and Western intelligence agencies believe North Korea sent over 10,000 soldiers and many weapons to help Russia in Ukraine. In return, North Korea might be getting advanced technology. Its soldiers also gain experience from modern warfare, including how to use drones in battle.
