Kim Deal’s First Solo Track in a Decade: “Coast” Featuring Steve Albini Production

Kim Deal Returns as a Soloist After 10 Years with the Song "Coast"

After a decade-long hiatus from releasing solo music, Kim Deal has surprised fans with a new song called "Coast". The song features production by Steve Albini, with whom Deal had previously worked, and was released with an incredible story and details that make it unique.

The Song’s Inspiration

Deal’s inspiration for the song came from attending her friend Mike Montgomery’s wedding, where she was impressed by the band Grape Whizzers’ performance of Jimmy Buffett’s "Margaritaville" with "revealing levels of low self-esteem". The song is supported on guitar by her twin sister and bandmate, Kelley Deal, as well as former Breeders bassist Mando Lopez, and drummer Lindsay Glover. Additionally, the Chicago brass band Mucca Pazza contributed wind instruments.

The Song’s Release

The song was written by Deal in 2020, but its release was delayed due to the pandemic. "Coast" is a departure from Deal’s usual indie rock sound, showcasing a more experimental and atmospheric style.

Steve Albini’s Involvement

Steve Albini, the legendary producer of Nirvana and Pixies, passed away in 2024 at the age of 61. However, his involvement in the production of "Coast" adds to the song’s unique story and significance.

No News on a New Solo Album

At present, it is unclear if "Coast" will be part of a new solo album by Kim Deal or not. However, fans are thrilled to know that she is working on more music, including dates she opened for Olivia Rodrigo with The Breeders.
