On April 3, 2023, the Lao government announced his demise, stating that he had passed away due to natural causes at 10:30 am on April 2. A funeral ceremony is set to take place on April 7 in front of the Luang Prabang stupa in Vientiane, starting at 1 pm.
A Life of Dedication
Khamtai Siphandone’s journey began on February 8, 1924, in the Champasak province. He pursued his secondary education in what is now Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. In 1953, he joined the Indochinese Communist Party, marking the beginning of his lifelong commitment to the revolutionary cause.
As a prominent figure in the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, Khamtai Siphandone played a crucial role in the country’s transition to socialism in 1975. He rose through the ranks, becoming the Supreme Commander of the Lao People’s Liberation Army and later, a member of the party’s politburo.
A Legacy of Leadership
Khamtai Siphandone’s leadership spanned several decades, with key positions including Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, and eventually, Prime Minister of Laos in 1991. In 1998, he took on the role of President, which he held until his retirement in 2006.
The Lao government has declared a five-day nationwide mourning period, from April 3 to 7, during which entertainment activities, sports competitions, and other festivities will be suspended. Flags will be flown at half-mast across the country and at Lao embassies worldwide.
In the capital city of Vientiane, a four-day ceremony will be held to pay respects to the late leader, from April 3 to 6. Government agencies, social organizations, and the general public are invited to participate in the mourning process, which will take place between 8:30 am and 12 pm and 2 pm and 5 pm.
The joint statement by the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, the National Assembly, and the government of Laos described Khamtai Siphandone as a devoted revolutionary who spent his life working towards the development of the country and the betterment of its people. His passing is seen as a significant loss for the party, the state, and the people of Laos.
