Pop sensation Katy Perry is about to make history as the first singer to perform in space. She’s joining an all-female crew on Blue Origin’s New Shepard spacecraft.
The Crew
Perry will be accompanied by:
- Lauren Sanchez, Jeff Bezos’ fiancée and a helicopter pilot
- Gayle King, a TV personality
- Amanda Nguyen, a human rights activist
- Kerrianne Flynn, a filmmaker
- Aisha Bowe, a former NASA rocket scientist
The crew will blast off from West Texas on a 10-minute suborbital flight, reaching an altitude of over 100 km. This will be the first time an all-female crew has flown without a male companion in 60 years. The only other woman to have achieved this feat was Valentina Tereshkova in 1963.
Training and Prep
Perry recently shared a video on Instagram, giving her followers a sneak peek into the capsule that will take her to space. She can be seen wearing a sleek blue spacesuit and showcasing her seat, labeled “Feather.” The video also highlights the team’s training sessions.
In the video, Perry expressed her excitement, saying, “I want to sing in space… It’s like my dreams are coming true.” She added, “Believing in your dreams and saying them out loud is the way to make them happen.”
The mission is set to launch at 8:30 am local time. During the flight, the crew will experience four minutes of weightlessness before returning to Earth via a three-parachute capsule.
