Karan Johar Reacts to South vs Bollywood Film Comparison at Waves Summit 2025

The entertainment industry is abuzz with the ongoing debate about South Indian cinema versus Bollywood. At a recent summit in Mumbai, filmmaker Karan Johar weighed in on the topic, stressing that such comparisons only serve to divide the industry. He was joined on stage by actor Vijay Deverakonda, and together they discussed the need for unity within Indian cinema.

The Problem with Comparisons

Karan Johar pointed out that when we pit South Indian cinema against Bollywood, we’re creating an unnecessary divide. He believes that this comparison is not only unproductive but also harmful to the industry as a whole. “I think it’s most important that we don’t get divided,” Karan said. “When you ask these questions, you’re actually dividing us. When you separate us, you’re breaking us.”

A Call for Unity

Vijay Deverakonda echoed Karan’s sentiments, suggesting that the debate between South and North Indian cinema is more of a headline-grabber than a meaningful discussion. He cited examples like “Pushpa 2” and “Jawan,” which demonstrate the power of collaboration and unity in the industry. “If we come together, it sends a message of togetherness,” Vijay said. “All these things are possible with collaboration.”

Karan Johar’s Current Projects

As for Karan Johar’s current projects, his production house has recently released “Kesari 2,” starring Akshay Kumar. He’s also set to produce “Nagjila,” with Kartik Aaryan slated to star in the lead role.
