Johnny Depp reflects on Hollywood boycott of him

In free fall since 2016, one of the biggest players of the last decade, Johnny Depp, had a terrible descent into hell. Imprisoned in the allegations of his ex-wife Amber Heard for alleged physical and psychological violence, the actor has sought as best he can to counter-attack and continues to claim his innocence. But that was when he lost, in 2020, his lawsuit against The Sun, a newspaper calling it “Wife beater”, that his career continued to descend lower than earth.

The actor was violently dismissed from the saga of Fantastic Beasts, where he played the role of Gellert Grindelwald. His dismissal was carried out in public, where Warner bros forced him to resign. He was replaced at a moment’s notice by Mads Mikkelsen. Behind, he was also left out of the franchise Pirates of the Caribbean where he played for 17 years and five films the pirate Jack sparrow, which has become a pillar of global pop-culture. His other projects were also shattered since he was sacked from the series. Houdini and that his latest feature film with a majority of author’s imprint, Minamata, has never been broadcast by the Metro Goldwyn Mayer in large scale.

The only real ally of Johnny Depp remain the producer Jerry bruckheimer (Pirates of the Caribbean, Lone Ranger). The latter wished for a return in the form of a cameo of Depp in the sixth opus of Pirates of the Caribbean. He does, however, have a solid fan base calling for his reintroduction to Hollywood. A petition aiming at the eviction ofAmber Heard ofAquaman 2 still reached several million signatures. On the Hollywood side, it would be whispered that Robert downey jr, who will be the producer of Sherlock Holmes 3, wants to work with the actor so that he is the villain of the film.

In a rare interview where he was promoting Minamata, Depp returned to his boycott of Hollywood. Realized by Andrew Levitas, Minamata stars Depp as the reporter Eugene smith. The film is based on the citizens of Minamata in Japan, victims mercury poisoning. The filmmaker hoped to raise awareness of the horrific effects the incident continues to have on people today. Recently, Levitas lambasted the attitude of the MGM, accusing the firm of doing everything to bury the film because of the affair Johnny Depp. The studio counterattacked by simply announcing Minamata as being ready for an indefinite outing to the United States.

It is near the Sunday Times that the interpreter of Jack Sparrow and the Mad Hatter broke the omerta around his boycott of Hollywood. He assured that, for the good of those directly concerned by the events of Minamata that he and Levitas tried to transcribe in this film, the MGM had to release the feature film:

“We looked these people in the eye and promised that we would not be exploited. That the film would be respectful. I believe we stuck to our end of the bargain, but those who came in later [La MGM, ndlr] should also maintain theirs. Some films touch people. And it affects those in Minamata and people who go through similar things. And for anything … For the boycott of Hollywood towards me? A man, an actor in an unpleasant and messy situation in recent years? But, you know, I’m heading to where I need to go to do it all … To bring it to light [Concernant son procès]. ”

There is no doubt that MGM will react soon after these statements by Johnny Depp, allowing the feature film to have probably a somewhat clearer future.
