Slate Auto, a startup backed by Jeff Bezos, has launched its first electric vehicle, the Slate Pickup. Priced at $27,500, this compact pickup truck is one of the most affordable EVs in the US market. After a $7,500 federal tax credit, the price drops to $20,000.
The base model, called Blank Slate, comes with a stripped-down design. It has no infotainment system, touchscreen, or premium audio. Instead, it features a phone mount or a portable Bluetooth speaker holder. The truck is available in a single color – gray – and has a standard 52.7 kWh battery pack, offering a range of 150 miles. Buyers can upgrade to an 84.3 kWh battery for a 240-mile range.
Key Features
The Slate Pickup is powered by a single 150 kW motor, driving the rear wheels. It produces 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, with a top speed of 90 mph. The truck accelerates from 0-60 mph in 8 seconds. It supports Level 3 fast charging, replenishing 20-80% of the battery in 30 minutes. Level 2 charging adds 25-40 miles per hour, with a full charge taking 4-8 hours.
The Blank Slate model has a two-seat cabin and a composite plastic body. It can carry a payload of 3,500 pounds. Compared to the Ford Maverick, the Slate Pickup is 25 inches longer. The base model comes with manual mirrors, but buyers can opt for power mirrors as an upgrade.
Customization Options
Slate Auto offers over 100 accessories to customize the pickup truck. Buyers can convert the two-seat truck into an SUV with a five-seat capacity and a closed roof. Alternatively, they can choose an Open Air Kit for an open-top design. Owners can also wrap the truck in their preferred color. Additional accessories include spare tire carriers, bumpers, wheel flares, and roof racks. Future-proof connectivity allows for easy installation of aftermarket accessories.
