Japan’s Former Empress Michiko Turns 91, Recovering from Hip Fracture

Former Empress Michiko of Japan, who broke centuries of tradition by marrying into the imperial family, has marked her 91st birthday while living a quiet life of reflection and continued engagement with global affairs.

The Imperial Household Agency announced on October 20, 2025, that the former empress, mother of current Emperor Naruhito, is recovering well from a hip fracture sustained last year. She now primarily resides at her Tokyo home.

Agency officials stated she enjoys reading and closely follows domestic and international news. This reflects her sustained intellectual curiosity despite her advanced age.

Born Michiko Shoda, she made history as the first commoner to marry an heir to the Chrysanthemum Throne. Her wedding to then-Crown Prince Akihito in 1959 captivated the nation.

Their relationship began on a tennis court, earning it the affectionate nickname “love on the tennis court.” This marked a significant departure from centuries of tradition where imperial spouses were chosen from the aristocracy.

Empress Michiko and Emperor Akihito jointly abdicated in 2019. This was the first abdication by a Japanese emperor in more than 200 years.

Their decision cleared the path for their son, Emperor Naruhito, and Empress Masako to ascend to the throne. Since their abdication, the former imperial couple has significantly reduced their public engagements.

They now lead a simpler life at their residence in Tokyo. Despite their reduced public presence, the Japanese populace continues to express deep loyalty and admiration for their kindness and dignified conduct.
