Typhoon Peipah recently brought a punishing blow to Japan’s Shizuoka prefecture. On September 5, 2025, the powerful storm delivered heavy rain and fierce winds across the region. At least 24 people were injured, and more than 40 homes suffered damage. Japanese news outlet NHK was among the first to report on the storm’s immediate aftermath.
The city of Makinohara felt the typhoon’s full force, becoming the hardest-hit area. Strong winds ripped tiles from roofs and knocked down countless utility poles. In Yaizu, another affected city, farming greenhouses lay scattered and destroyed. A 40-year-old farmer sustained injuries while trying to cope with the agricultural destruction there. Kakegawa City and Yoshida Town also reported considerable damage from the violent gusts.
Officials from the Shizuoka provincial government have started to piece together the extent of the damage. Their initial reports indicate that six homes in Makinohara were completely destroyed. Another 34 homes in the same city suffered partial but significant structural damage. The Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed that thick rain clouds covered Shizuoka as the typhoon moved in.
Local authorities continue their work, surveying the affected areas and helping those impacted. They have also issued new warnings to residents. People living in vulnerable areas should remain alert for potential landslides and sudden flash floods. The danger from strong winds is still present in many places. The community faces a long road ahead to fully recover from Peipah’s destructive visit.
