A severe weather warning has been issued for Japan’s southern Izu Islands. Typhoon Nakri, a storm named by Cambodia, is rapidly approaching the area. Residents are bracing for extremely strong winds, heavy rainfall, and towering waves. Officials fear landslides and flash floods could strike the already vulnerable region.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported on October 13, 2025, that Typhoon Nakri is moving toward the southern Izu Islands. This chain of islands lies southeast of Tokyo. Many areas have recently seen heavy rain and strong winds from another storm. This new typhoon raises serious concerns for public safety.
Impact on Island Communities
Islands like Hachijojima and Aogashima are directly in the storm’s path. Early morning on the day of the warning, Hachijojima Airport recorded wind speeds up to 153 kilometers per hour around 6:00 AM local time. Over a single hour, 37.5 millimeters of rain fell. Such intense weather can quickly cause damage.
The JMA expects Nakri to move east near the southern Izu Islands before noon. It will likely maintain wind speeds of 126 kilometers per hour. Gusts could reach a frightening 180 kilometers per hour. These powerful winds might snap power poles and damage parts of buildings. Flying debris also poses a major threat to anyone outside.
Rising Waters and Safety Warnings
Forecasters also predict massive waves, potentially reaching 9 meters high. Some spots could experience extreme rainfall, with up to 80 millimeters falling in an hour. Over a 24-hour period, ending early Tuesday morning, total rainfall could reach 200 millimeters. This amount of rain greatly increases flood risks.
The Izu Islands faced heavy rain and strong winds from Typhoon Halong not long ago. This previous storm has left the ground soaked and rivers swollen. Authorities are urging everyone to be careful. They warn about potential landslides, rivers overflowing their banks, and flooding in low-lying areas. People should stay indoors, especially away from windows, to remain safe.
