James Cameron compares the Titan tragedy to the sinking of the Titanic in 1912

The director of the movie “Titanic”, James Cameron, spoke on Thursday about the tragic implosion of the Titanic submersible – in which four passengers and its pilot died – expressing surprise at its “similarity” with the real case of the Titanic itself.

I am struck by the similarity with the Titanic disaster itself, in which the captain was warned repeatedly about the presence of ice in front of his ship and, nevertheless, he went at full speed towards an icy area,” the Oscar-winning filmmaker told ABC News.

“It’s a very similar tragedy in the same place. It’s amazing and really surreal. (…) It’s about a nightmare that has passed through the back of all our minds at some point,” Cameron added.

Likewise, the Canadian director, who defended the safe practice of deep-sea diving, stressed that “many people” had shown their concern about the company OceanGate Expeditions because “what they were doing was too experimental and needed to be certified.”

The submersible was operated by this company whose chief executive, Stockton Rush, is believed to be among those killed and who has also been criticized for allegedly using off-the-shelf components for parts of his ship.

The box office success of the film “Titanic” (1997) relied heavily on footage of the actual shipwreck site and shots that reflected how submersible devices were used to explore the wreckage of the ship.

In his statements, Cameron added that he was a “friend” of the French pilot Paul-Henri Nargeolet, one of the Titan passengers, whom he had known for 25 years and said that a death “in such a tragic way is almost impossible to process.” .

The US Coast Guard announced Thursday that the “debris” found near the area where the remains of the Titanic correspond to the external part of the Titan submersible, missing since Sunday with five people on board.

Rear Admiral John Mauger, of the Coast Guard, also stated that the occupants have died.

The remains of the device were found by a remote-controlled vehicle operated by the Canadian ship Horizon Arctic and later experts determined that “they are consistent with a catastrophic implosion”, that is, a rupture and collapse caused by the greater pressure from the outside.

Although there is no longer any hope of finding them alive, The work to recover the remains of the device will continue.

All this to try to find out what happened since the submersible lost contact with the outside world on Sunday, when the implosion occurred and also what were the causes of the accident.
