Big changes are coming to tax obligations next year, and it’s time to think about replacement. Take note of the changes that are coming and the consequences of not acting soon in this state. As part of the efforts to update the vehicle fleet in Mexico, a replacement program is being implemented in most states. This exclusive program for residents updates license plates to new, more secure designs.
In Jalisco, the replacement process has been a success, thanks in part to the Paquetazo 3×1 program. This initiative combines three essential services: vehicle verification, license plate replacement, and renewal, all for a single payment of $900 pesos. Although it simplifies the process, it has received criticism and complaints from some political parties, who claim that it is misleading. However, the importance of updating license plates cannot be overstated, as it improves security and facilitates the identification of vehicles in cases of theft or accidents.
So, what changes can we expect in 2026? Despite the replacement calendar being extended throughout 2025, based on the terminal of the plate, starting in 2026, only vehicles with “Collage” or “Cabañas” design plates will be allowed to circulate, while previous designs like “Jalisco”, “Minerva”, and “Gota” will be invalid. If you have one of these older designs, it’s essential to make the replacement when it’s your turn, before it’s too late in 2026.
To make the change, drivers must follow a specific process:
- Complete the responsible verification
- Schedule an appointment through the official portal of the state’s revenue collectors
- Bring the required documents, including the verification certificate (approved or not approved), recent proof of address, vehicle invoice, proof of payment of the renewal, valid official identification, and the previous set of plates
Once you’ve completed all the requirements, the process takes no more than 10 minutes, and you’ll have your new plates with the current “Cabañas” design, which includes a QR code for quick and secure identification.
The replacement calendar has been extended throughout 2025, but be aware that if you wait until 2026, your car with old plates may be unable to circulate, and it’s not worth the risk. The replacement calendar will follow a schedule based on the termination of the current plates:
- January and February: Plates ending in 1
- February and March: Plates ending in 2
- March and April: Plates ending in 3
- April and May: Plates ending in 4
- May and June: Plates ending in 5
- June and July: Plates ending in 6
- July and August: Plates ending in 7
- August and September: Plates ending in 8
- September and October: Plates ending in 9
- October and November: Plates ending in 0
The new “Cabañas” and “Collage” plates are approved and comply with the federal standard NOM-001-SCT-2-2016, which guarantees the necessary security, durability, and visibility. Thanks to their QR code, it’s easy to access each car’s information.
If you still haven’t replaced your plates in Jalisco, it’s time to take this measure seriously and make the replacement. Remember that these cars must pay for the replacement, and taking advantage of the Paquetazo 3×1 option may be convenient for staying up-to-date with your tax obligations and circulating without any issues in Jalisco.
