Israel announced Thursday the targeted assassination of Alireza Tangsiri, the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy. The strike is a massive escalation in the ongoing 2026 Iran War. The wider conflict erupted on February 28 following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed Tangsiri was killed alongside several senior naval deputies. Katz stated Tangsiri was “blown up” in a coordinated operation. The Israeli government holds the commander “directly responsible for the terrorist act of bombing and blocking the Strait of Hormuz.”
The IRGC implemented a strict naval blockade on the strait in early March. The closure immediately crippled one of the most vital transit points for international energy markets. Tangsiri oversaw the deployment of Iranian naval vessels and drones to enforce the blockade.
To break the stranglehold, the United States and Israel launched the 2026 Strait of Hormuz campaign on March 19. The joint military effort aims to destroy Iranian assets closing the waterway. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the assassination of Tangsiri. He called the successful operation “yet another example” of the deep military cooperation between Israel and the US.

Iran has not yet issued an official comment on Tangsiri’s death.
Widespread bombardments continue across the region. Iranian missile strikes target Israeli positions. Israeli forces are simultaneously conducting operations in Lebanon. Backdoor diplomatic channels remain open despite the daily combat. Pakistan is currently mediating a 15-point ceasefire proposal drafted by the Trump administration. No resolution has been reached.
