IPL 2026 schedule: BCCI confirms 50-match second phase amid state election security crunch

The Board of Control for Cricket in India locked in the final leg of the TATA IPL 2026 season on Thursday. Officials dropped the schedule for a grueling 50-match sprint running from April 13 to May 24. The league explicitly split the calendar this year to dodge massive logistical and security bottlenecks. Three major state assembly elections are hitting Assam, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu simultaneously. Police forces are stretched thin. The BCCI had to wait.

Phase two kicks off on April 13. Sunrisers Hyderabad will host the Rajasthan Royals. The action takes place in Hyderabad. This completes a heavily fragmented opening to the year. The league previously greenlit only the first 20 matches running through April 12. They bought time for the election commission’s final dates.

The tournament footprint is massive. Twelve distinct venues will host the remaining games. The logistics are brutal. A late start window already squeezed the calendar. The IPL pushed its opening day deep into March to accommodate a mandatory three-week player recovery period following the Men’s T20 World Cup final on March 8. Now the compression is worse. Fans will see eight double-headers. Afternoon matches start at 3:30 PM IST. Evening fixtures follow at 7:30 PM IST.

Home-field advantage gets complicated. Several franchises are actively splitting their base camps. The Punjab Kings will divide their time between New Chandigarh and Dharamsala. Rajasthan Royals locked down four home games in Jaipur. Royal Challengers Bengaluru will play three times in Bengaluru and shift two fixtures to Raipur.

The playoff picture remains blank. The BCCI explicitly withheld the dates and venues for the final knockout rounds. Those details will drop at a later date. Right now the focus is entirely on surviving the league stage. Teams are studying the travel miles. The April heat is coming.
