Instagram Reorders Story Viewers, Shows Repeat Watchers

Here’s what’s going on with Instagram. If someone views your Story, then checks it out again, their name will show up at the top of your viewer list. It’s like they just saw it for the first time.

Typically, Instagram lists viewers in real-time. The person who viewed your Story most recently is at the top, and it goes down from there. But now, if someone re-watches your Story, they’ll jump back up to the top.

What’s changed

This isn’t just for regular Stories. It also works for Highlights, which are like a recap of your past week. So, if someone checks out your Highlight again, they’ll show up at the top of that list too.

Even if you’re using a “lurker” account – one that doesn’t follow the person whose Story you’re viewing – your name will still show up if you check out their Story again. You’ll be listed below the people they actually follow, though.

Give it a try

Go ahead and test this out with your friends. See if it works the same way for everyone. And let’s be real, if you’re the type of person who likes to sneak a peek at someone’s Story more than once, you might want to think twice now.

This change might not be the same for everyone, since Instagram often tests new features with specific groups of users. But if you’re one of the people who got this update, you might want to be more careful about who you’re checking out on the down low.
