Indonesian MPs Nearly Double Allowance Weeks After Public Protests

Indonesian lawmakers have significantly increased a key allowance, reigniting public anger just weeks after nationwide protests forced the reduction of another benefit, with critics suggesting citizens are being “fooled.”

The “recess allowance” for Members of Parliament (MPs) has nearly doubled, rising to approximately $45,000 from about $25,600. The increase, announced by Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, became effective on October 3.

This move comes after a wave of nationwide protests in August targeted what many considered excessive parliamentary benefits. A monthly housing allowance of $3,000, almost ten times the minimum wage in Jakarta, was a primary flashpoint.

That housing allowance was subsequently reduced to quell widespread public discontent. However, the new increase in the recess allowance has renewed accusations of political impunity.

Lucius Karus of Formappi, a parliamentary watchdog non-profit, sharply criticized the decision. “It’s like Indonesians have been fooled by a comedian,” Karus told local media. “We were just happy about the cancellation of the housing allowance, but in reality, another amazing allowance has appeared.”

Deputy Speaker Ahmad justified the latest increase by citing an uptick in MP activities during parliamentary breaks. He also stated the previous allowance did not account for rising costs of food and transportation.

The recess allowance is intended to support MPs in their official duties. These include visiting constituents and gathering feedback when parliament is not in session, which occurs approximately five times annually.

The public’s frustration underscores a broader perception in Indonesia. Many believe the country’s political elite operates without accountability.

Critics have called for greater transparency in parliamentary spending. They suggest MPs should provide easily accessible reports on how these allowances are utilized, perhaps through a dedicated application.
