Ian Cathro, the man leading Estoril, often sees more than just the scoreboard. After his team’s 3-1 victory against AVS SAD in the fifth league match, he shared his thoughts. He offered a deep look at Estoril’s performance, a win, yes, but not without its twists and turns.
Cathro was quick to point out that the game was far from perfect. Yet, he believed his squad showed real competence in how they played. For the first seventy minutes, their plan worked well. Then, things got a little wild in the final stretch. “I watch how the players work every day,” Cathro explained. “My focus, and theirs, must always be on the quality of our effort and our game.” He felt the team delivered a truly skilled and high-quality showing overall.
The coach also spoke about Georgian midfielder Lominadze, a newer face finding his feet. Lominadze is quickly grasping the team’s style and showing off his abilities. Cathro sees every player as part of this learning curve, adapting to Estoril’s way of playing. “Each player brings something unique,” he noted. “The midfield is key for us, and we need different skills there. This depends on who we play and the kind of football we want to offer.” It’s clear that building a versatile squad is on his mind.
Despite the satisfaction from the win, Cathro issued a clear warning. There are parts of their game that simply cannot be repeated. Specifically, he pointed to issues on the left side of the field. “We lost control there,” he said directly. “Some players were tired, and individual mistakes crept in.” This shows that even in victory, a coach’s eye is always on improvement.
Cathro knows that perfection is a rare guest in football. He anticipates more imperfect games in the coming months. “Our goal is to get better in every single area,” he stressed. “We want to reach a point where we are always closer to playing truly competent games.” He acknowledges this is a tough path, a constant uphill climb for any team aiming for the top.
