Huawei is taking a significant step towards reducing its reliance on Western technology by developing its own PC operating system, HarmonyOS PC. Zhu Dongdong, President of Huawei’s Tablet and Personal Computer (PC) division, recently unveiled this new OS, which is built on three core pillars: HarmonyOS Base, HarmonyOS Ecosystem, and HarmonyOS Experience.
HarmonyOS Base: The Foundation
The foundation of HarmonyOS PC is HarmonyOS Base, which provides the underlying structure for the OS. This includes the HarmonyOS kernel, the Ark engine for enhancing graphics and user interface performance, and the StarShield architecture for boosting security. These components work together to ensure the OS runs smoothly, efficiently, and securely.
HarmonyOS Ecosystem: A Connected Experience
The HarmonyOS Ecosystem is designed to seamlessly connect various devices, including IoT devices, without relying on other platforms. This ecosystem comprises over 150 specialized apps and supports more than 2,000 apps within its ecosystem. It also features WPS Office for document processing and other essential apps for various tasks. The ecosystem enables users to enjoy a cohesive experience across different devices.

HarmonyOS Experience: User-Centric Design
HarmonyOS Experience is the user interface that makes it easy for users to access various features and services. It supports connections with over 1,000 external devices, more than 800 standard peripherals across 20 categories (such as keyboards, mice, and monitors), and over 200 secondary devices (like printers and scanners). This design ensures that users can enjoy a streamlined experience.

Huawei has also integrated numerous AI features into HarmonyOS PC. The company plans to reveal more details about HarmonyOS PC on May 19, 2025.
