Honda is reviving its iconic Prelude sports coupe after a 25-year absence, re-engineering the model as a driver-focused hybrid to blend its heritage with advanced automotive technology for the European market.
The new sixth-generation Honda Prelude e:HEV combines a sophisticated full-hybrid powertrain with innovative handling systems, aiming to deliver both exhilarating performance and exceptional efficiency. Its design signals a return to the brand’s sporty roots while embracing electrification.
Hans de Jaeger, Senior Vice President of Honda Motor Europe, noted the global anticipation for the Prelude’s return since its concept reveal in October 2023. He highlighted the name’s history of cutting-edge engineering.
“With its elegant design, the innovative Honda S+ Shift, and the cutting-edge full-hybrid powertrain, drivers and passengers will never want the journey to end,” de Jaeger stated.
Central to the driving experience is the Honda S+ Shift technology. This system simulates the feel and sound of rapid automatic gear changes, creating a virtual eight-speed transmission. It works in tandem with Active Sound Control (ASC) to synchronize engine sound, rpm, and road speed for a more natural acceleration feel.
Controlled by paddle shifters on the steering wheel, it allows drivers to “shift” gears akin to a manual transmission. Downshifts also incorporate engine braking with a rev-matching “blip” for enhanced control.
The e:HEV powertrain, built on Honda’s 25 years of hybrid development, features a 2.0-liter gasoline engine paired with a dual electric motor automatic transmission. This setup delivers 184 horsepower (134 kilowatts) for responsive power and high refinement.
Dynamic handling is further supported by suspension technology derived from the Honda Civic Type R. This includes an advanced multi-link suspension, adaptive dampers, and the latest iteration of Honda’s Agile Handling Assist (AHA) system.
The Prelude’s exterior draws inspiration from gliders, emphasizing timeless elegance and a wide, low stance. Its interior is designed to evoke a glider’s cockpit, prioritizing driver focus, excellent visibility, and premium materials.
Cabin features include a customizable 10.2-inch driver display and a 9-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An eight-speaker sound system, developed in partnership with Bose, is also standard.
Despite its sleek, coupé profile, the new Prelude offers practicality with seating for four occupants. A hatchback-style rear provides up to 663 liters of luggage space.
Safety is integrated through the latest Honda SENSING system, which includes recalibrated Adaptive Cruise Control, Road Departure Mitigation, and Lane Keeping Assist tailored to the model’s dynamic character.
Customers can choose from four exterior colors, including a new Moonlit White Pearl, alongside Meteoroid Grey Metallic, Crystal Black Pearl, and Racing Blue Pearl. The interior offers two-tone finishes in white and blue, or black and blue.
The Honda Prelude e:HEV is scheduled to arrive in the European market next year. Final specifications, equipment details, and pricing for markets like Portugal will be disclosed closer to its launch.
