HBO Max Expands Chespirito Universe with Don Ramón, Chapulín Colorado Series

The universe of Roberto Gómez Bolaños is expanding. HBO Max is developing two new productions based on his beloved characters. This follows the impact of the recent ‘Chespirito: Sin querer queriendo’ bioseries.

One new project is a live-action bioseries centered on ‘Don Ramón.’ The other is an animated series titled ‘Los Colorado,’ which reimagines ‘El Chapulín Colorado.’

HBO Max confirmed the ‘Don Ramón’ series through its social media channels. The platform announced the show, which is currently untitled.

“Excuse me, Don Ramón is coming! The new series inspired by the unforgettable original character from El Chavo del Ocho, very soon only in HBO Max,” the platform stated on X.

The production aims to portray the iconic character from a contemporary perspective. It will retain his signature simple, spontaneous, and street-smart humor.

Mariano César, HBO Max’s Senior Vice President of Content for Latin America, noted Don Ramón’s suitability. He said the character’s personality allows for fresh stories without losing his comedic essence.

The series intends to show Don Ramón outside his traditional neighborhood setting. He will face everyday challenges through a more modern lens.

Details regarding the release date, cast, and director have not yet been disclosed. THR3 Media Group, which collaborated on the ‘Chespirito’ bioseries, is confirmed to be involved.

The second project, ‘Los Colorado,’ is an animated series. It reinterprets “El Chapulín Colorado” as part of a family unit, including his partner and two children.

This version seeks to engage children and pre-teens. It features a more dynamic, digital approach aligned with current animation styles.

Roberto Gómez Fernández, Chespirito’s son, previously mentioned this project. He discussed the ‘Chapulín’ series and a second season during an interview with Mara Patricia Castañeda.

Francisco Herrera, an artist from Huevocartoon, shared the first official image. It revealed a modernized Chapulín, complete with his classic “Chipote Chillón” and a heart-shaped shield.

Advancements in the series confirm the return of familiar villains. These include ‘Tripaseca,’ ‘Alma Negra,’ and ‘Doctor Cerebrok.’

The series is a collaboration between Huevocartoon, Grupo Chespirito, and THR3 Studios. It will consist of 20 episodes, each 24 minutes long.

Although the hero had an animated adaptation in 2015, this new version aims to expand the character’s universe. It will adapt to digital audiences and offer broader, family-oriented stories.

A notable detail in the previews is the animated appearance of Chespirito’s family. Graciela Fernández and some of his children will be featured, honoring his legacy.

The development of new series raises questions about potential legal repercussions. The previous ‘Chespirito’ bioseries navigated this by changing character names.

For example, Florinda Meza was portrayed as “Margarita Ruiz,” and Carlos Villagrán as “Marcos Barragán.” This avoided direct conflicts.

Florinda Meza, Chespirito’s widow, did not pursue legal action against the previous bioseries. She instead used her Instagram to clarify her versions of events.

She was married to Bolaños from 2004 until his passing in 2014. Her public statements focused on disputing portrayals rather than legal claims.

The likelihood of legal issues for these new productions, particularly ‘Los Colorado,’ remains uncertain. Rights to Chespirito’s characters are currently divided.

Roberto Gómez Fernández is the primary legal representative and heir to the artistic legacy. He also controls the “Chespirito” brand.

Florinda Meza, however, holds rights to specific works. She claims 50% of the literary rights, or scripts, co-owned with Gómez Fernández.
