Hailstorm causes yellow alert, affects 5 Edomex municipalities

Sometimes, life throws a curveball, or in this case, a whole lot of hail. Recently, several communities in the State of Mexico got a surprise. Places like Atizapán de Zaragoza, Tlalnepantla, Cuautitlán Izcalli, Tultitlán, and Tecámac woke up to an unexpected hailstorm. It wasn’t just a sprinkle; this was a serious weather event. Streets turned into rivers, underpasses filled with water, and trees decided to take an unexpected tumble. Getting around became a real challenge, and daily routines were suddenly put on hold. It was a stark reminder of how quickly nature can shake up our world.

Community Spirit Shines Amidst the Storm

When the storm hit, local heroes quickly stepped up. Teams from Civil Protection and Firefighters in Atizapán de Zaragoza worked tirelessly. They rushed to help those affected by the hailstones and heavy rain. One significant incident involved a primary school where a wall and a fence collapsed. A huge amount of water simply overwhelmed part of the school’s boundary.

Thankfully, despite the scale of the damage, no one was hurt. This brought a huge sigh of relief to everyone. Emergency crews kept going, checking out the damage and helping people in the hardest-hit spots. Their main goal was to bring things back to normal and keep everyone safe. They worked hard to make sure people knew what was happening, which helped avoid more problems.

Roads and Trees Face the Brunt

The powerful hailstorm also caused big flooding issues, especially on main roads in Atizapán de Zaragoza. The Lago de Guadalupe highway and the Atizapán-Nicolás Romero road were particularly tricky for drivers. Water and sewage teams, known as Sapasa, quickly got to work. They used special trucks to clear the drains and get rid of the standing water.

Over in Cuautitlán Izcalli, a tree fell right in the middle of Calle Temoaya in the Urban Center. Firefighters were on the scene quickly. They worked to remove the tree and clear the area. This event temporarily stopped traffic and made it risky for people walking by. Emergency services had to cordon off the spot to keep everyone safe.

Tlalnepantla saw its usual share of flooding, a common issue during heavy rain and hail seasons. A major underpass where the México-Querétaro highway meets Avenida Reyes Heroles became completely submerged. The water was so high that even a gas station in the area flooded. This made it tough for cars to pass and stopped the business from operating. It was a tough hit for the local economy and added extra risks.

Tultitlán and Tecámac Also Grapple with Floodwaters

Tultitlán experienced significant flooding along the Vía José López Portillo. Luckily, the water drained away fairly quickly in that area. In Tecámac, a tree fell onto a parked truck. Thankfully, no one was injured, which was a relief. While there was property damage, residents were mostly concerned about the state of local roads and how prepared the area was for future storms.

Interestingly, residents in Tultitlán had already been raising concerns before this hailstorm. They had protested on Avenida Mexiquense, demanding repairs for huge potholes that plague the road. In some parts, especially near the Circuito Exterior Mexiquense highway and the Tultitlán Central de Abastos market, the road surface is almost nonexistent. This shows a real lack of proper road maintenance.

Avenida Mexiquense is a state road, and its condition is really bad. Drivers often find giant potholes hidden by mud and standing water. This frequently damages cars and makes driving incredibly difficult. Every trip becomes a risky challenge. It highlights the urgent need for local officials to fix these crucial roads.
