Granada’s Brain Drain: Talent Exodus

Despite losing the category, Granada holds a strong nucleus of players with active contracts, a foundation to rebuild a competitive squad in the Second Division. However, the challenge lies in retaining these players, particularly in the midfield, where Gumbau, Sergio Ruiz, and Gonzalo Villar are key figures.

Sergio Ruiz stood out as one of the team’s brightest spots this season, delivering consistent performances amidst the turmoil surrounding the team. His impressive form has garnered attention from other clubs, with Las Palmas showing significant interest and willing to pay a sum close to three million euros for his services.

Gumbau and Ruiz have formed a formidable partnership. As Granada drops to the Second Division, Gumbau is free to explore other options, and is considering offers, although he remains open to continuing with the club.

Gonzalo Villar’s future also seems uncertain. Last summer, Granada invested heavily in the midfielder, but his performance has failed to meet expectations, leading to speculation that he may leave. Villar’s priority is to remain in the top flight, and Valencia has already approached him with a potential move to Mestalla.

If all three players leave, Granada will need to rebuild its midfield and find new leaders to guide the team. The club may be willing to listen to offers for Villar in order to facilitate his departure and allow him to pursue his goal of remaining in the First Division.
