Mass Protests in Tbilisi Over EU Accession Delay
Thousands of Georgians gathered in Tbilisi to form a human chain, expressing their support for the country’s integration into Europe and opposing the government’s decision to postpone EU accession negotiations.
President Salomé Zurabishvili Joins the Protest
President Salomé Zurabishvili, whose term is set to expire, joined the demonstration, stating that she will not leave office due to the disputed parliamentary elections. Her presence was met with applause and cheers from the crowd.
Protesters Demand New Elections and EU Accession
The protesters, carrying Georgian and EU flags, chanted “Georgia is Europe!” and demanded new parliamentary elections, citing that the previous election did not reflect the will of the people.
Opposition Leaders Speak Out
Tinatin Bokuchava, president of the opposition United National Movement, emphasized the urgency of holding new elections and fighting for Georgia’s European future.
Residents Join the Protest
Residents like Bacho Kimutsidze joined the protest, stating that they have no other option but to defend their path to the European Union.
Warning from the Mayor of Tbilisi
The mayor of Tbilisi, Kaja Kaladze, warned that if President Zurabishvili refuses to leave the presidential residence, she could face charges of appropriation of a government building, punishable by 3 to 15 years in prison.
Opposition Vows to Protect the President
The opposition leader, Giorgi Butikashvili, announced that they will prevent the president from being evicted from her residence, stating that they will go to protect her.
Historic Human Chain
This is the second human chain formed in Tbilisi, with the first taking place in August 2008, in defense of the country’s territorial integrity during the war between Georgia and Russia.
