The new Spanish League season for 2025/26 kicked off with a major stumble for Girona. They faced Rayo Vallecano at home and ended up losing 3-1. For Girona’s Argentine goalkeeper, Paulo Gazzaniga, it turned into a nightmare start. His time on the field lasted only 43 minutes.
Gazzaniga didn’t make headlines for amazing saves. Instead, a series of big mistakes overshadowed his performance. The first blunder came early. He basically handed over the very first goal of the championship to Jorge de Frutos. This happened because Gazzaniga couldn’t quite handle a quick pass from his teammate, David López. The ball got away, and Rayo capitalized.
Things went from bad to worse just before halftime. At the 43-minute mark, Gazzaniga made another huge error. He committed a penalty inside the box, fouling De Frutos again. The referee had no choice but to point to the penalty spot and show Gazzaniga a red card. He was sent off the field. Isi Palazón stepped up and scored the penalty, making the score 3-0 for Rayo. Girona managed to pull one goal back in the second half through Joel Roca, but it wasn’t enough. The match ended 3-1.
What a tough day for the keeper and for Girona.
