Fortnite crypto is a scam, Epic Games is taking legal action

The popular computer game Fortnite now seems to have its own cryptocurrency, at least the project uses the same name and graphics as the game. However, the game and the crypto have nothing to do with each other, which is why the publisher, Epic Games, is taking legal action.

There is no Fortnite crypto

The token, like the game, is called fortnite (FNT) and would be developed by the end of 2021. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney declares on Twitter that Fortnite has no official crypto, and that the Twitter accounts promoting the token are scammers. The CEO also does not understand that there are places (read: exchanges) where the crypto is offered, although it was not possible to buy the crypto on the major exchanges.

Eand quick search leads us to Fortnite Token on the Binance Smart Chain. The cryptocurrency has a supply of no less than 10 billion FNT tokens, but the total market value has already fallen to 0 dollars. The ecosystem even has a pretty professional looking one website and Twitter account† The Twitter account FNT SWAP also seems to be part of the scam.

The FNT crypto’s Twitter account initially defended itself against Sweeney, denying it was a scam. Sweeney responded that the crypto project infringes on intellectual property and trademarks without permission. He emphasizes to his large number of followers that the lawyers of Epic Games are taking action. FNT’s Twitter account has since been deleted.

Gaming increasingly important part of crypto

huhIt’s not exactly the first time that gaming has become a special category within crypto. In fact, it is now a whole branch in itself. Earlier this week we wrote about how the first game with NFTs made it to the Epic Games Store. The game is published by Gala Games. Gala uses the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain for this.

It is obvious that the line between crypto and gaming will become increasingly blurred in the future. That means that in the future you will probably have items and loot can sell within games for real money, not just for in game currencies. At least that seems to be the promise of issuers when they want to introduce NFTs. Then it would be even easier for you to earn your living with gaming. Be sure to report it to the tax authorities. However, the gaming community is highly skeptical about this, seeing the arrival of NFTs as another way for these publishers to exploit their customers.
