Portu could not have started his second spell in Girona better. A goal from Murcia in the 88th minute saw the win over Las Palmas (1-0), giving the team 10 points from a possible 12 and going into the break second. After a rather frustrating season at Getafe, the player had regained his smile and success in front of goal. He hasn’t been unveiled as a signing for Rojiblanco yet but Portu has opened up about his first feelings in an interview with the club’s media.
His return, which ended on the last day of the market, came as a pleasant surprise to many fans. Not for Portu, who always had the idea of returning to Montilivi. “When they told me there was a possibility of returning to Girona, I said of course. I wanted to come here. During those years, I always had thoughts of going back, whatever it was, and reliving the love that was so much given to me before. I wanted to go back to Montilivi.”
The Murcian hasn’t had time to realize he’s back in Girona colors but he was delighted with the welcome. “It’s been an incredible few days, I still haven’t had time to process it all. I’m super happy. For welcoming my team-mates, the existing group, the coaching staff and staff I already knew, and most of all the fans. They welcomed me with open arms and the love I needed.
After defending the interests of Real Sociedad and Getafe in recent seasons, Portu admitted he was a thorn in his side following his departure from Montilivi. “At Girona it was my debut in the first division and also promotion with a very nice year in the second. In a season full of ups and downs, I had my eye on relegation. Thanks to the departure, I was able to experience that.” Many moments, especially at Real, have made me learn and live a different way of life. Girona is a very special club, from 10th CadEvery time I put the shirt on I’m super proud and my body is asking me to do my best“.
