The two first met at a movie premiere where Dharmendra was already present on stage and when Hema Malini was called on stage, Dharmendra had said something to Shashi Kapoor after seeing him for the first time. Then he had the opportunity to go to a premiere. For which his mother prepared him by applying Kanjeevaram sari, kajal in his eyes and gajra in his hair. She arrived and was called to the stage in the interval of the film. At that time both Shashi Kapoor and Dharmendra were present on stage. When Dharmendra saw Hema Malini, he slowly said to Shashi Kapoor in Punjabi: Kudi Badi Changi Hai. Hema Malini heard this but did not express it. And when Hema Malini intervened, she turned red with embarrassment as she shared the stage with Dharmendra.
After this meeting, the two of them worked together on many movies and no one knew when on-screen love turned into real love. They finally got married in 1980 and became one forever.
