Farioli: Porto’s Win Over Braga a ‘Proof of Maturity’

FC Porto coach Francesco Farioli aired veiled frustrations about perceived on-field disadvantages following his team’s crucial 2-1 Liga Betclic victory over Sp. Braga on Sunday.

Farioli, whose side secured its ninth league win, suggested there was a need to “train when the field is smaller and when, whenever we commit fouls, we get yellow cards.” His remarks hinted at underlying tensions during the match.

Despite his irritation, the coach called the victory a “test of maturity.” He praised his team’s ability to adjust against a “very well-coached team, which plays good football and is very aggressive.”

Substitutes played a decisive role in the outcome. Farioli highlighted the impact of Gabri Veiga and Borja Sainz, who combined for the winning goal. Veiga provided the assist, and Sainz finished adeptly.

Farioli also cited Pablo Rosario’s entry in the second half as key to regaining control in midfield. He noted Sp. Braga’s high intensity and mobility, which required a player of Rosario’s caliber.

The coach recognized his team had to control play more without the ball than in previous games. He described the match as “very good” at halftime, despite suffering “a little more at the beginning of the second half.”

FC Porto now holds 28 points in the league. The club has already faced strong opponents including Sporting and Benfica.

Farioli stressed the importance of focusing on upcoming matches, starting with Utrecht and then Famalicão. He described Famalicão, Sp. Braga, and Gil Vicente as teams currently “at their best moment.”

He emphasized a “game by game” approach. The coach stated it would be a “long journey” and that immediate focus was critical.
