Underdog victories and tense penalty shootouts defined the second round of Germany’s domestic cup competition on Tuesday.
Second-tier side Holstein Kiel delivered the round’s biggest shock, eliminating Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg with a 1-0 away victory. Alexander Bernhardsson scored the decisive penalty for Kiel in the 42nd minute. Wolfsburg played with ten men from the 36th minute after Jenson Seelt received a red card.
In another all-Bundesliga clash, Borussia Dortmund edged out Eintracht Frankfurt 4-2 on penalties after their match ended 1-1 following extra time. Eintracht initially took the lead through Ansgar Knauff in the seventh minute. Julian Brandt equalized for Dortmund in the 48th minute, pushing the game into extra time.
Portuguese forward Fábio Silva, who entered the game for Dortmund in the 84th minute, converted one of the crucial penalties in the shootout.

Hamburger SV also advanced, defeating fellow top-flight team Heidenheim 1-0 away. Robert Glatzel scored Hamburg’s winner from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute. Heidenheim was reduced to ten players when Siersleben was sent off in the 44th minute. Fábio Vieira started for Hamburg in that match.
