Ex-SC Olhanense Striker Djalmir Challenges Gyokeres and Pavlidis to Futevólei Match

Djalmir, a former standout footballer for Olhanense, has taken his skills to the sand with futevólei, a Brazilian sport that combines elements of volleyball and soccer. Djalmir finished fourth in the 2024 national championship alongside his partner, Nivaldo Barros.

The transition from professional football to futevólei wasn’t a sudden one. Djalmir had dabbled in the sport during his football days, engaging in friendly sessions with teammates before training. However, he only began playing competitively after retiring from football. A friend and former teammate, David Peres, invited him to try out futevólei at his court. Djalmir was hooked from the start.

Not Just a Celebrity Hobby

While futevólei may seem like a leisure activity for retired footballers, Djalmir insists that it requires a high level of skill and athleticism. To excel, players need to master various techniques, including heading, chest control, and footwork. They must also possess good game sense and positioning.

Many former footballers, such as João Moutinho and Bruno Alves, enjoy futevólei recreationally. However, Djalmir notes that few compete at a high level.

Djalmir credits his football background for his futevólei prowess, as his heading ability gives him an edge. He suggests that players like João Moutinho, with their intelligence and game-reading skills, could excel in futevólei.

A Challenge to the Stars

Djalmir has issued a challenge to footballers Viktor Gyokeres and Vangelis Pavlidis, suggesting they take on the futevólei court. “They’re strong players, but I’m not sure they can adapt to the sand,” Djalmir said.

He’s also keen to see João Neves, another footballer with a reported interest in futevólei, in action.

Flashback to His Football Days

Djalmir’s football career was marked by a stint as sporting director under Sérgio Conceição at Olhanense. He recalls Conceição’s intense training sessions and dedication. One notable anecdote is Conceição’s habit of running 12 km from the training ground to Olhão after training, a testament to his physical fitness.

Djalmir also remembers playing alongside Jan Oblak, now a star goalkeeper at Atlético de Madrid. “You could tell he was different,” Djalmir said, praising Oblak’s natural ability, even back then.

Djalmir’s story is a compelling example of how sports can intersect and how athletes can find new passions after retirement.
