Evo Morales Calls for Independent Probe into Bolivia’s Coup Attempt

Evo Morales urged an investigation to find out "the truth" about last Wednesday's coup attempt

Bolivian Ex-Leader Evo Morales Calls for Thorough Investigation into Coup Attempt

Former Bolivian President Evo Morales has called for a comprehensive investigation into last Wednesday’s coup attempt, expressing his doubts about the nature of the event. Morales questioned what kind of coup involves government officials walking around “happy” despite the alleged takeover.

In a public appearance, Morales confirmed that he received a call from the Minister of the Presidency, María Nela Prada, who informed him that the coup had begun. Morales pointed out that the ministers were allegedly happy and walking around Murillo Square, describing the coup as having “zero injuries, zero shots fired.”

Morales also criticized his successor, President Luis Arce, for allegedly giving too much power to General Juan José Zúñiga, who is believed to be the mastermind behind the coup. Zúñiga had previously stated that Arce himself wanted to raise his popularity, a claim that Morales doubts.

The former president expressed his concerns that he was the primary target of the coup, citing warnings he received from “patriotic soldiers.” Morales argued that the plan was to remove him from power, despite the ongoing investigations and the detention of 21 individuals.

Zúñiga, who was arrested shortly after the attempted coup, downplayed his role in the plot and named Aníbal Aguilar, brother of a former Minister of Education, as the “ideologist” behind the coup. According to reports, Aguilar had been planning an “uprising” since May to “take power and call elections.”

The investigation into the coup attempt is ongoing, with the full extent of the plot and the individuals involved still unclear.
